Airport security screening and changing passenger satisfaction: An exploratory assessment
نویسندگان
چکیده
Since September 11, 2001, airport screening procedures in the US have been continuously evolving. For example, the passenger screening process is now trying to strike a balance between security and customer service (i.e. minimizing wait times). This balancing act has important implications not only for passenger safety, but also for the financial stability of an airline industry that is faced with volatile energy prices and sometimes burdensome labor agreements. Using data from 2002 and 2003, we estimate multinomial logit models to uncover factors that determine passenger satisfaction at security screening points. Our findings show that, while wait times at security screening points are significant determinants of passenger satisfaction, many other factors come into play. Moreover, the results show that the determinants of customer satisfaction are not stable over time. This suggests that further refinements in airport screening procedures should give careful consideration to the factors underlying passenger satisfaction, and how these might change over time, rather than focusing exclusively on minimizing wait times at passenger screening points. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The Impact of Post-9/11 Airport Security Measures on the Demand for Air Travel
We examine the impact of post-9/11 airport security measures on air travel in the U.S. Using five years of data on passenger volume, we evaluate the effects of the implementation of baggage screening and the federalization of passenger screening on the demand for air travel. These two congressionally mandated measures are the most visible changes in airport security following the 9/11 attacks. ...
متن کاملA fuzzy model for evaluating metal detection equipment at airport security screening checkpoints
Every passenger who travels by air is exposed to security screening. As part of this procedure, the passenger typically is screened by a walk-through metal detector. Such a device should effectively detect prohibited metal items while simultaneously ensuring adequate throughput at the security screening checkpoint. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate both these factors when selecting an appr...
متن کاملThe Impact of Aviation Checkpoint Queues on Security Screening Effectiveness
Passenger screening at aviation security checkpoints is a critical component in protecting airports and aircraft from terrorist threats. Recent developments in technology have increased the ability to detect these threats. However, the average amount of time it takes to screen a passenger still remains a concern. This paper models the queueing process for a multilevel airport checkpoint securit...
متن کاملA mathematical framework for sequential passenger and baggage screening to enhance aviation security
To enhance security at both national and global levels, airport security screening systems must be designed with high efficiency and effectiveness, which are affected by both screening technologies and operational procedures for utilizing those technologies. The operational efficiency and aviation security can be enhanced if an effective passenger prescreening system is integrated into the bagg...
متن کاملAssessing U.S. Travelers' Trade-offs for Aviation Safety Objectives: A Natural Experiment
Understanding air travelers’ values for aviation safety is essential to design effective and wellaccepted security measures. This study investigates changes in U.S. travelers trade-offs for passenger screening objectives using the occurrence of an international aviation incident (loss of Malaysian Airline Flight 370) as a natural experiment. We also examine how alternative screening procedures ...
